Duo FredDo

The last two decades in popular music have brought demise to traditional genres such as rock, pop, dance, electronica, folk, as well as the broadly taken field of classical music. Both artists and the audience dismiss one-dimensional facets of tradition as anachronistic and turn towards an interplay of genres, the complexity of which defies linguistic and journalistic classifications. Even though such concepts of expression drift away from the possibilities of social cohesion, revolutionary charge or gathering into movements, they also open up boundless possibilities for artistic play, unrestrained fantasy and creative expression in which sky is the limit.

Two young artists with a residence in Austria, pianist Frederik Neyrinck and flautist Doris Nicoletti, established their musical aspirations in line with the spirit of the times. Their art stems from the so called “classical music”, but also features a significant departure in terms of devising the basics of their expression and combining not only particular musical styles of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but also various spheres of human creativity. They speak about it themselves: the component of “sound” and its expansion is the crucial jumping-off point in the work of this duo. Furthermore: “The experience of listening should lead into a new dimension, not only in electronic music, but also through various installations and compositions performed in non-classical ways.”

It is no wonder that the latest project of these two artists, who perform as Duo FredDo (after their initials) since 2015, transcends even the boundaries of “music as such”, exploring connections between music and architecture through a peculiar synergy of artistic and philosophical approach to creation. Philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Shelling formed the concept of architecture as frozen music, providing this idea with a theoretical framework, while the composer Xenakis and architect Le Corbusier also approached musical realization. Duo FredDo make one step further in developing this creative concept, performing compositions of various young artists from Austria, giving a chance to each of them to find their own vision of the connection between music and architecture. Short pieces and miniatures for flute and piano reflect a correlation with certain buildings, icons or architectural styles and refer to theoretical contemplations of this topic.
