Cartoon Exhibition: Tonto Comix (Austria)
Tonto is the name of an independent label from Graz, which, in the period between 1992 and 2004, released about thirty albums dedicated mostly to experimental, non-commercial music. Tonto’s work on visual contents contributed to them being something else nowadays – under the banner Tonto Comics, three members of this collective (Edda Strobl and Helmut Kaplan from Austria and Michael Jordan from Germany) will present their production of cartoons and illustrations at an exhibition in Pančevo, including both individually published materials in Noise, Nordpol, Once Upon etc. and entirely new works.
Starting from 2000, Tonto have published cartoons, organized exhibitions (they are also founders of a cartoon festival which existed between 2003 and 2006) and participated in collaborative work with cartoonists and illustrators, both local, from Graz, and those from the international scene. Creating cartoon workshops and joining the work of other cartoonists, Tonto represent a fluid idea difficult to capture in words. They say of themselves: “Our platform for ImageText literature sees itself as part of a network of groups dispersed all over Europe, which chose the cartoon medium as a field of their research. Thanks to our marginal position in countries in which German is the primary language, Tonto are actually closer to a wider European region. In that sense, Berlin is just as close as Belgrade.”
